The last week has seen lots of publicity in the news around fly-tipping and its growth in the past year. Local councils are using over £67M pounds to clean up, catch and prosecute those who are causing all the mess. Bearing in mind this is all taxpayers money, how can you help?

Well, first of all do not fly tip. Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of rubbish and other large or bulky items in places where dumping is not licenced. Fly-tipping is a criminal offence and you can be charged with a hefty fine and in the worst case to prison.

Fly tipping is awful for the environment, can cause pollution, dangerous fumes and hazards.

What can you do if you see waste that has been dumped?

First rule – do not touch it. Often fly tipped waste has broken glass or other hazardous materials.

And secondly, do not ‘disturb’ the site. Not disturbing the site means that any evidence of the fly tippers can be collected and profiled.

The next thing you need to do is to take note of the amount, location, date, time and if there is any water near the place.

If you see people fly tipping, make sure you note down how many people are there, what they are fly tipping and when it was. Also, if there are vehicles involved then the registration numbers, car models and colours should be taken into consideration.

Lastly, you must report! Local councils often have services to report fly tipping – either a designated service, email or number. It is important to do so as soon as possible so the waste can be dealt with quickly and efficiently.

From 2014/15 there were 90 thousand incidents of fly tipping reported, which saw an increase of 5.6 perfect from 2013/14.

Local councils are now being given more power to fine with even heavier fines – and many have taken to using different schemes to preventing the upward curve of fly tipping. This includes a naming and shaming schemes. This is common in many London boroughs

There have also been many CCTV prosecutions made, as more surveillance is being installed in fly tipping hotspots. These include many highway road spots – these are known as the ‘ideal’ location and hotspots for fly tippers.

If you find you need any legal advice around fly-tipping or simply want to know more, don’t hesitate to call our team on: 0116 2999 199 or alternatively you can email us at: info@d-w-s.co.uk
