<p>The rise, first announced in April of this year, follows the recommendations of the independent Low Pay Commission.</p> <p>Almost all workers who work in the UK are entitled to the national minimum wage and the new rates which have come into force are:</p> <p>The government has estimated that around more than 890,000 of Britain’s lowest workers will gain from these changes. However it is thought that this gain will be cancelled out by the retail price index measure of inflation which currently stands t 3.3% in the last 12 months ending in August.</p> <p>It is thought that unions are calling for a steeper jump, and the TUC calling for far bigger increase to the minimum wages. Whilst the Resolution Foundation, thinks that the minimum wage was in effect falling, in spite of the increase, due to the pace of inflation. The Living Wage Foundation is also campaigning for employers to pay a living wage, £8.55 in London and £7.45 elsewhere in the UK.</p> <p>Failure to comply with the NMW legislation can result in the first instance in the issuing of an enforcement notice requiring the employer to pay the difference between what was actually paid and what the worker was entitled to under the legislation.</p> <p>Further non-compliance could result in the issue of a penalty notice, financial penalties and employers being publicly named and shamed under revamped plans announced last month to make it easier to clamp down on rogue businesses.</p> <p> </p>
