flight delays rights

Flight Delays – What are your rights?

There’s’ nothing more pleasing than the thought of jetting off to somewhere where the sun is shining and enjoying a well-deserved holiday. But getting there can be difficult. Queuing, travel, transfers and airport madness are a concoction of stress and can cause you unnecessary anxiety.

Dispel your worry, read up and know your rights.

So when it comes to delays with your place – what rights do you have?

The following rights only apply if you have booked a flight from a European airline or from a European airport. These airlines and airport are under EU law enforcement and therefore are obliged to give you the following rights.

Airports included are from the UK, European Union (EU), Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.

If your flight is delayed for 2 or more hours you are entitled to:

If you’re not approached by someone from the airline, speak to a staff member from the crew or airport staff. They should give you vouchers for all the above items. If they don’t offer any or don’t knowingly delay for more than 2 hours then you should be able to claim expenses within reason. So make sure you keep all your receipts.

If your flight is delayed for more than 3 hours you are entitled to exactly the same except you are entitled to compensation on top that.

The compensation only applies if the delay was the airline’s fault due to fault or booking error. Unfortunately, if bad weather, storms or unforeseeable events delay your flight, you won’t be awarded extra compensation.

The amount of compensation that you are entitled to, is subject to how long your flight was, the length of the delay, and whether or not you were flying to a destination within the EU.

You can check how long your flight is on sites such as https://www.webflyer.com/

If your flight is delayed for 5 or more hours then it is your choice whether or not you choose to take the flight. If you don’t you’re entitled to a full refund plus a refund for any connecting flights you have missed. You’re also still entitled to the same as the above.
